Accredited qualifications for largescale electrical vehicle chargepoint installations

This training is to support the design and installation of largescale electric vehicle charging points.

Largescale charging points are defined as:

  • Medium power - from 50 kW up to 90 kW (rapid charging)
  • High power - capable of up to 350 kW

Low power chargers (up to 22 kW) are covered in our domestic/small commercial course.

Who are these qualifications for?

Learners undertaking this course may already be doing the associated roles from practicing operative capacity, with proven and demonstrable skills in working as skilled and competent electricians and/or electrical installers. Validation of these skills and level of competence are reflected in the entry requirements for these qualifications.

These qualifications are aimed at professionals interested in understanding how to design, install and maintain the range of electric vehicle charging equipment and systems available. They aim to provide expert guidance to learners wishing to gain further knowledge and understanding of electric vehicle charging equipment design, installation and maintenance.

What does these qualifications cover?

These qualification covers how to redesign commercial premises and public spaces to accommodate electric vehicle chargers and the electrical supply systems. The scope of works for electric vehicle charging installations in commercial premises and public spaces and the features of the electric vehicle charging equipment and associated accessories It also covers the safety requirements, maintenance strategy and technical assurance process for designing electric vehicle charging sites.

Learners will achieve the following mandatory units:

302/304 Design and quality assurance of largescale electric vehicle charging installations.
303 Installation and maintenance of largescale electric vehicle charging installations.

Assessment

  • 2921-32/302 Short-answer and scenario-based question paper on design and quality assurance - 90 minutes
  • 2921-33/303 Short-answer and scenario-based question paper on installation and maintenance - 120 minutes
  • 2921-32/304 Design project — 3 hours

Required literature

  • IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation (5th edition)
  • BS 7671:(2018)+A2(2022)
  • IET Electric Vehicle Charging Installations at Filling Stations.

Learner entry requirements

To ensure suitability for the training and assessment candidates should hold one of the following qualifications to evidence their electrical competence:

  • 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures, and the Environment)
  • 2357 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in installing Electrotechnical Systems (Electrical Maintenance)
  • 5357 Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification
  • 2356 Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker
  • 2346 Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification
  • Other Awarding Organisations equivalences will also be acceptable, or
  • ECS Gold Card, JIB Electrician or Approved Electrician Card.

Other qualifications to consider are:

  • HNC Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • 2396 City and Guilds Level 4 Award in the Design and Verification of Electrical Installations

The qualifications above must have been achieved no more than 5 years prior to starting this qualification or there must be evidence the candidate has remained current by completing relevant CPD such as City and Guilds 2382 or equivalent.

For those who work for a manufacturer or a design company

If you are considering enrolling on the training to develop your understanding of the largescale EVSE space, but do not have any of the qualifications mentioned above - then you can contact us for an online interview to enrol. This will mainly be to look through your CV (you may have an engineering or a manufacturing background for example - or maybe a HNC/HND) and contain a professional discussion where we will determine if you would be able to be successfull with the training and assessments. Prior training (if absent) such as Wiring Regulations may be recommended.
